Swaram, the popular performing arts organization based in San Francisco bay area hosted yet another power-packed and fun-filled cultural extravaganza titled ‘Gold Spot’, in early February 2015 to raise funds for India Literacy Project. This has been their 3rd successive year of partnership with ILP. More than 150 Swaram volunteers worked over the last 14 months to host 6 phenomenal shows in Tamil and Telugu.
The shows were hilarious and entertaining as ever, and also helped raise awareness about ILP amongst the bay area Indian residents. The funds raised by Swaram over the last 2 years have benefitted more than 15,000 kids of brick kiln laborers in Thiruvallur and Poonamallee areas of Tamil Nadu.
School going rates have improved almost 200% in these places due to our efforts! Part of the proceeds from this year’s show will support 15,000 more children across Thiruvallur, Kanjeepuram, and Dharmapuri districts of Tamil Nadu. Our target areas have abysmally low school attendance, and the quality of education is not up to the mark here. The rest of the funds will support two more ILP projects - in Kurnool district of Andhra Pradesh, and Mahabubnagar district of Telangana. These projects will address problems like child marriage and child labor that are keeping many children out of school.
ILP extends a heartfelt THANK YOU to the Swaram team for their excellent partnership. Together, we wish to make great strides in the area of education for the children of India!
