Over 7000 families find themselves at the edge of starvation with Government orders to stay-in-place
Updates from the field
ILP and migrant workers
India Literacy Project has been supporting the education of children of migrant laborers of Thiruvallur district of Tamil Nadu to ensure that the displaced children get access to schools. The district is dotted with brick kilns, where migrant laborers from different parts of Tamil Nadu and some as far away as Odisha work long hours to fulfill the unending demand for bricks. ILP has worked over 6 years across multiple blocks in this district to drive policy changes to allow children to be enrolled in schools in both the source and destination villages their parents migrate to and from.
With the Covid-19 virus, all work has come to a standstill. These migrant laborers have no work or money and over 7000 families find themselves at the edge of starvation with Government orders to stay-in-place. These laborers are away from their native villages, this makes access to the Government services hard.
$25 (₹ 2,000/-) will help ILP provide a family of four basic provisions for one month.
ILP is requesting its very generous and caring donors to help out in this moment of need. ILP will continue to work on the long-term goal of children’s education as we deal with this crisis.
Please consider supporting the families of these brick kiln workers.
