Mathematics is not about numbers, equations, computations, or algorithms. It is about understanding.
The above line was said by Srinivasa Ramanujan – Wikipedia, an Indian Mathematician more than a century ago. But it is relevant even today.
At India Literacy Project we understand that math is by far the most dreaded subject for most children. As part of our Multi-Dimensional Learning Space (MDLS) program, we at India Literacy Project, are constantly thinking about how to make math easy, fun, and intriguing for children.
Learning math in school has mostly been about procedural fluency (which is important) and rarely about conceptual understanding, visualization, or applying math to real-world problems. Also, children end up looking at arithmetic, algebra, or geometry as unrelated topics in math and are not able to correlate.
At India Literacy Project one of our approaches is to make math fun and intriguing to help children visualize math and also look at each concept from the lens of algebra (generalization), arithmetic (specific use case numerical computation), and geometry (visualization).
December 22 is observed as National Mathematics Day to mark the birth anniversary of the eminent Mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan.
