Life doesn’t come with a manual. It comes with a mother.
Matru (meaning mother) Committee is one such wonderful initiative with elaborate measures to ensure the foundational years of a child are well-rounded for a strong future.
This initiative is run by India Literacy Project in collaboration with its ngo partner rural reconstruction organization (rro) and the government of orissa.
The matru committee comprises 5-6 members – one ward member, one pregnant lady, one lactating mother and 2 members from local self-help groups. These members stay for a term of one year.
As part of this committee, various activities are implemented and monitored:
- Ensuring children are taught basic health hygiene i. E. , using sanitizer and soap to wash hands regularly.
- Counselling mothers to send their children to anganwadi centers regularly.
- Arranging and monitoring the distribution of school shoes, clothes, nutritional items.
- Pre-education teaching follow-up in terms of appropriate mobile usage by Anganwadi teachers to teach by play method using singing and dancing.
